How Does Premium SAM-e Work?

Premium SAM-e, or S-adenosylmethionine, is a naturally occurring compound in the body that plays a crucial role in various biochemical processes. Here how it works:

SAM-e is involved in a process called methylation, where it donates a
methyl group to other molecules. Methylation is a fundamental
biochemical reaction that regulates various functions in the body,
including the synthesis of neurotransmitters, DNA, and proteins.

SAM-e is a precursor to neurotransmitters such as serotonin,
dopamine, and norepinephrine. These neurotransmitters play key roles
in mood regulation, emotional well-being, and cognitive function.

By contributing to neurotransmitter synthesis, SAM-e has been
associated with mood support. It may help maintain a balanced mood
and emotional state.

SAM-e has anti-inflammatory properties and may contribute to joint
health. It is often used to support individuals experiencing joint
discomfort.

SAM-e is involved in the methylation of compounds in the liver. This
process is crucial for the detoxification of harmful substances,
supporting overall liver function.

Methylation, facilitated by SAM-e, is essential for regulating gene
expression and maintaining cellular health. It plays a role in the
synthesis and repair of DNA.

SAM-e has been suggested to have antioxidant properties, helping to
neutralize free radicals and reduce oxidative stress in the body.

SAM-e participates in a delicate balance of biochemical reactions,
contributing to the overall well-being of cells and tissues throughout the
body.

SAM-e Dosage and Supplements

Despite the promising clinical and preclinical research, SAM-e has not been approved by the FDA for medical use. In general, regulatory bodies aren’t assuring the quality, safety, and efficacy of supplements. Speak with your doctor before supplementing. The below doses used in clinical trials may not apply to you personally. If your doctor suggests using SAM-e, work with them to find the optimal dosage according to your health condition and other factors.

Depression

500-1,500 mg daily, 6+ weeks

Osteoarthritis

1,000-1,500 mg daily, 1-4 months

Liver disorders

1,000 mg daily

Cholestasis in pregnancy

1,000 mg daily until delivery

FAQ

For optimal benefits, it’s recommended to take one tablet daily, preferably in the morning.

SAM-e was safe in most clinical trials. The most common side effects were nausea and other digestive issues, followed by anxiety

Despite some public concerns, SAM-e supplementation doesn’t increase the levels of homocysteine and the risk of heart disease.

It may trigger mania in patients with bipolar disorder but also in vulnerable healthy individuals.

Health experts suggest avoiding SAM-e for people with compromised immunity, due to an increased risk of some infections.

Drug Interactions

Drug interactions can be dangerous and, in rare cases, even life-threatening. Always consult your doctor before supplementing and let him know about all drugs and supplements you are using or considering.

SAM-e raises the levels of serotonin and could thus interact with antidepressants and increase the risk of serotonin syndrome. Even though some doctors safely combined it with different antidepressants in clinical trials, health experts advise against this combination.

Other drugs and supplements that can increase serotonin include:

  • Cough drugs (dextromethorphan)
  • Painkillers (tramadol)
  • Medications for nausea (metoclopramide, ondansetron)
  • L-tryptophan
  • St. John’s Wort

SAM-e may also interact with a drug for Parkinson’s disease, L-DOPA. Excess amounts of SAM-e depleted dopamine and caused the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease in decades-old studies on mice. This combination should be avoided until new studies come out.

Use in Pregnancy and Children

SAM-e was safe in studies on pregnant women, but they should take it under strict medical supervision. Children should avoid it until we know more about its safety.
